American Airlines Pets Carriage Policy

Pets can be carried as carry-on, checked and cargo baggage. How these will be carried will depend on size of animal, breed and requirement of passenger.

Pets as carry-on baggage

AA allows maximum of 7 kennels per flight and each kennel shall have only one pet. This does not include the service animals which can be carried separately.

You are required to pay for the pet charges for carrying in cabin. The pet has to be at least 8 weeks old.

The kennel has to be 19in x 13in x 9in in dimension and the pet has to be naturally comfortable in it while keeping it underneath the front seat.

Kennels can also be in the form of Sherpa bags which are made of material which repel water and have nylon mesh ventilation from 2 side. These kernels are collapsible.

Charges: On AA flights within and between USA and Canada, the Caribbean Mexico, Central America and Colombia, the charges are $125 per kennel.

 

Pets as Check in baggage

American Airlines allows you to take 2 pets in check-in. You are required to contact the airline reservation office at least 48 hours before travel. You are also required to check in within 4 hours ahead of scheduled departure of flight and have a certificate of a veterinary doctor within 10 days of travel, 60 days of return (on same ticket) and 10 days of return (on different ticket).

  • Kennels shall not be less than 102cm x 69cm x 76cm in dimensions and more than 45 kg weight including the pet and containers. These shall be made of wood, metal, plastic or other materials. Shall have a door made of welded or cast metal. It has to be secured at top and bottom with bolts and screws. Shall be ventilated on door and from 2 sides. It shall be leak and escape proof. Food and watering dishes shall also be secured inside the kennel.
  • Pets are allowed on flight of less than 12 hours duration (including time of customs clearance). These are also allowed on flights to/from:

           Within 48 contiguous states of USA

           US and Canada

           Alaska

          Central America

          Mexico

          Puerto Rico

          St. Croix

          St. Thomas

There are federal regulations to be met as well. You need to certify in writing that the pet has been fed and offered water within 4 hrs of delivering these to airplane, is securely attached to outside of kennel and has your signature and date and time of signing. Feeding and water instructions for next 24 hrs also need to be provided by you. There is a restriction is mentioning “no food, no water” on kennel unless authorised by a vet.

The animal shall not be sedated since it can cause complications due to altitude pressure. Therefore, if sedatives have been administered, then its name, amount and time of giving shall also be provided.

Charges: On AA flights within and between USA and Canada, the Caribbean Mexico, Central and South America, the charges are $200 per kennel or $150 per kennel to/from Brazil.

Further, the dogs must meet the vaccinations requirements as mentioned here.

Cats breeds not allowed on AA flights:

  • Burmese
  • Persian
  • Himalayan
  • Exotic Shorthair

Restrictions based on temperature conditions

If the temperature at present or forecasted for future travel date is more than 29.4 degrees centigrade or is below 7.2 degrees centigrade at ground location, the pet cannot fly unless you have a letter from licensed vet that mentions the temperature range to which the pet is acclimatized. The letter shall not be more than 10 days old from the date of first flight of pet and not more than 30 days old of other trips in the itinerary.

If temperature is below -6.6 degrees C, pet cannot be checked in at all, even if you have the vet letter.


Rules for Carrying Sports Equipment in American Airlines

The following table illustrates the various sporting equipments that are allowed on Americal Airlines. It also mentions the associated costs and the restrictions on weight and size for carrying these.
